In collaboration with The Outsiders Perspective and the (Fashion) Minority Report, the BFC is launching a 5-minute survey to make further diversity progress.

With the launch of the Fashion DEI Census, DEI sending for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the British Fashion Council marks its desire to make the fashion industry more inclusive in light of the current political and social context. Led by the three organisations, the survey will gather information from all job roles (retail, brand, media, agency, freelancers, etc.), functions (marketing, operations, HR, finance, store, etc), and seniorities (from graduate to C-suite). No details about the workplace will be asked as this audit form aims to look at the industry collectively rather than at individual levels.

Caroline Rush, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council said, “While most organisations have taken the time for critical reflection, there is an alarming lack of industry-wide data on the demographics of the UK fashion workforce, making it exceedingly difficult to track our progress.” At a time when issues surrounding race, gender, and overall inequalities are being raised increasingly vocally, it seems like the fashion industry is lacking initiative in bridging the gap.

Available on the BFC’s website, the survey is meant for everyone working in the fashion industry and will be filled in anonymously, as its objective is to capture the most significant amount of data across the nation “It is imperative that we gain this insight from across all levels of seniority, roles and identities, allowing us to build a broad understanding of the identities of our workforce, and the ways that we can collectively drive impactful change for those who remain underrepresented” as explained by Daniel Peters, founder of The (Fashion) Minority Report. “The last few years have been a wake-up call for industry to address imbalances in the workforce from Board to entry-level positions,” said Caroline Rush.

The audit closes on September 18th, and the results will be available before the year ends.
