British Vogue is on the look for a new Editor-in-Chief, as Edward Enninful is set to exit his role next year.
After six years working as both Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue and European Editorial Director, Edward Enninful will be stepping down in 2024. He is set to take over the newly created role of Global Creative and Cultural Advisor for Vogue and Editorial Advisor for British Vogue. According to a memo sent to different media platforms, this new position will allow him to “continue to contribute to the creative and cultural success of the Vogue Brand globally”, while “having the freedom to take on broader creative projects.”
Ever since his appointment in 2017, making history for being the first Black Editor-in-Chief in Vogue’s history, Enninful has been known for his impactful and forward-thinking editorials. Thanks to his increased focus on inclusivity, British Vogue has seen people of all backgrounds making its cover: front workers during the pandemic, disabled talents, as well as Paris Lee, the first openly transgender woman to make the front page. He also showcased many powerful role models like Oprah Winfrey, Greta Thunberg and Jane Fonda, to name a few. He has made not only a social and cultural impact for the magazine but also an economical one, whilst widely increasing commercial traction.
Born in Ghana in 1972, Edward Enninful rapidly became a leader in his industry. At the age of 18, he was appointed as fashion director for I-D magazine, making him the youngest fashion director for an international publication in history. In 2011, he became style director of W Magazine and helped the title out of its financial struggle thanks to the edgy elegance for which he is renowned. Throughout his career, Enninful created strong bonds with supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Pat McGrath and has actively participated in creating a more diverse fashion scene in media.
His past role as Editor-in-Chief will not be renewed, following a cost-cutting restructuring in the 2020s during which every Editor-In-Chief was eliminated, apart from him and the global editorial director of Vogue Anna Wintour. Condé Nast has yet to confirm how this restructuring will impact each magazine.
In the meantime, European editions will still be reporting to Enninful, while he is set to be involved in the recruitment of his successor.
