Chanel has confirmed the departure of Virginie Viard after five years as artistic director of its fashion collections. Viard, who spent nearly three decades at the renowned French fashion house, announced her decision on Wednesday.

Viard rose to prominence as the long time right-hand woman and confidante of fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld. Following Lagerfeld's passing in 2019, she was chosen as his successor, becoming one of the few female creative directors leading a major luxury brand.

Chanel expressed gratitude for Viard's contributions in a statement: "We confirm the departure of Virginie Viard after a rich collaboration of five years as artistic director of fashion collections... We would like to thank Virginie Viard for her remarkable contribution to Chanel's fashion, creativity, and vitality." The house also announced that "a new creative organisation will be announced in due course."

Viard's tenure coincided with a period of continued success for Chanel. She is credited with renewing the brand's signature style while preserving its rich heritage. Her last collection for Chanel will be unveiled at the upcoming Haute Couture show in June.

As she bows out gracefully the fashion world is left speculating who will fill the void she leaves behind. All eyes it seems are on the future direction of this iconic brand.
