The rumour mill was right all along!
Belgian designer Glenn Martens, who will continue as creative director of Diesel, has been appointed as the new head of Maison Margiela. He succeeds John Galliano, who led the house from 2014 to 2024. Martens' appointment, heavily rumoured since his departure from Y/Project in September 2024, marks a significant moment in the fashion landscape.
After 11 years at the independent Parisian label, which has since closed, Martens gained critical acclaim for his innovative and irreverent designs. His commercial success at Diesel, coupled with his artistic brilliance showcased at Y/Project, made him the leading contender for the prestigious position.
"After Martin, who gave life to the Maison and its unique Artisanal line, and John, who made it the most cutting-edge couture house in the world, I am proud to have a third couturier at its helm. Glenn, who studied at Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts like Martin, has already shown his prowess and his vision in couture," announced Renzo Rosso, CEO of OTB Group and founder of Diesel, where Martens has been leading the creative vision since 2020.
Announced earlier today Glenn Martens expresses his gratitude to Renzo Russo. "I feel extremely honoured to join the amazing Maison Margiela, a truly unique house that has been inspiring the world for decades. And I thank Renzo for the trust he is putting in me."
Known for its deconstructed aesthetics and conceptual storytelling, Maison Margiela has always celebrated the unconventional. Could Martens' ability to blend avant-garde with wearability be the perfect recipe to reinvigorate the brand while staying true to its core principles, only time will tell.
