Helmut Lang AW24
Peter Do’s sophomore runway collection for the brand opened New York Fashion Week 2024.
New York Fashion Week has officially started, and Helmut Lang was among the first brands to take the runway. Aiming to convey the essence of protection from the world’s current chaos, Peter Do took to a dystopian look and unconventional materials for the collection.
Opening with a plain white shirt and trousers covered in bubble wrap, the sheer look set the tone for the rest of the collection. Bubble wrap appeared throughout, emphasising protection from the world’s dangers. Do has emphasised that one of his sources of inspiration came from the oversized garments women use to protect themselves from harassment in public.

Despite this source of inspiration, the collection remained gender-neutral, taking the concept of protection further with utility vests, heavy yet fashionable padding, and prominent outerwear. The collection created a seamless connection between looser fitting pieces and those with sharp militaristic tailoring and was a standout on the runway, even with a mostly black colour scheme.
This Helmut Lang runway was an ideal opener to the week, encapsulating the artistry and creativity of fashion, as well as presenting unique, wearable, timeless pieces. The runway has set the tone for the week, and we have high hopes the rest will follow suit.
