After three years at the helm, Matthew M. Williams is parting ways with French fashion house Givenchy.
The news was first reported by WWD and has since been confirmed by the brand. Williams' last collection for Givenchy will be the men's and women's pre-fall 2024 collections, scheduled to be unveiled in the coming days.
Williams joined Givenchy in 2020, replacing Clare Waight Keller. During his time at the brand, he is credited with modernizing Givenchy's aesthetic and introducing a more streetwear-influenced approach. He also oversaw the launch of several new initiatives, including a collaboration with Nike and the opening of a new flagship store in New York City. Also the founder of the luxury streetwear brand ALYX Studio, which he launched in 2015. Williams has also collaborated with several other brands, including Nike, Moncler, and 1017 ALYX 9SM.
Williams' departure is the latest in a series of high-profile shakeups in the fashion industry. In recent months, a number of other major brands have seen changes at the top, including Gucci, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen. The reasons for these shakeups are complex, but they are likely due in part to the changing landscape of the fashion industry. As consumers increasingly shop online and demand more sustainable and ethical products, brands are under pressure to adapt.
Givenchy has not yet announced a replacement for Williams and it remains to be seen what the future holds for Givenchy without Williams at the helm. Although the brand has a rich history and a loyal following, it will need to find a way to navigate the changing fashion landscape in order to continue to thrive.
Only time will tell what Matthew Williams' next move will be, but he is sure to remain a major force in the fashion industry for years to come.
