The first month of fashion for 2024 has wrapped up with Paris Fashion Week.

It's official! Paris Fashion Week is over. Wrapping up the first fashion month of 2024, and leaving us with many exciting looks, trends, and iconic moments. From debuts to surprise appearances, Paris was a perfect wrap-up to the fashion shows that kicked off just over a month ago.

Amongst the debutants were Sean McGirr who debuted for Alexander McQueen, and Chemena Kamali who had a triumphant debut for Chloé, bringing the “it girl” back to runways in a glamorous yet down-to-earth way. On the other end of the creative director spectrum, Nicolas Ghesquière celebrated a decade at Louis Vuitton, using the milestone collection to look back at his time working for the brand through silhouettes and staple pieces.

Chanel’s runway took a journey back in time to its founders' very first boutique, paying tribute to Deauville, its site, and the characters in the seaside town that sparked the beginnings of Coco Chanel’s fashion triumphs. In another homage to a beloved town, the Balmain collection was an ode to Olivier Rousteing's hometown of Bordeaux, including prints, fruit and nut embellishments, classic cocktail dresses, and trench coats. Victoria Beckham’s inspiration, on the other hand, came from the hangers that held up her collection in a wardrobe, experimenting with silhouettes and structured blazers, all the while placing an emphasis on how the clothing hung off the models.

Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Valentino collection took a big step away from the colours we are used to seeing within the creative director’s work. The collection, titled “Le Noir” was all black, whilst showcasing the variety and depth the hue has to it through fabrics and layering, rather than giving in to the expected melancholy of the colour black. Mugler’s Casey Cadwallader shone a spotlight on personal power within his eveningwear focused collection and presented the runway with stars such as Irina Shayk and Paloma Elsesser.

Another star-studded catwalk was that of Vivienne Westwood, which saw Sam Smith, Lila Moss, and Amelia Hamlin walk the runway, and took inspiration from a combination of work of Giovanni Battista Moroni and sportswear. Elsewhere, Balenciaga’s show meditated on fashion, what it truly is, and what luxury means in today’s world, with tags attached to the pieces and clothing made out of other, unused pieces. With commentary on the currently overwhelming amounts of overconsumption, the house went as far as to partner with eBay to incorporate resale pieces into their invites for the show’s guests.

Schiaparelli was another brand that decided to zig when the fashion world thought they might zag, moving away from the red carpet couture and bringing everyday staples to the runway instead through suiting, coats, and everyday denim. Givenchy’s in-house studio team designed this AW24 collection for the brand, as the house is between creative directors. The collective effort brought us playful, elegant, and feminine which was a triumph despite the absence of a creative director.

Saint Laurent went down a sheer route, creating a collection of fitted silk dresses, presented either completely transparent or over a nude layer, drawing inspiration from one of Marilyn Monroe’s iconic looks. Dior also drew inspiration from the past, namely its first RTW line launched in 1967 and the token Miss Dior, bringing back the free, ambitious woman the first collection was made for.

Finally, Miu Miu wrapped up fashion month, bringing in elements created to shape personal style and reflect the personal growth of their wearers, with appearances from Little Simz, Amelia Gray, and Kristin Scott Thomas on the runway.

With the above and many more brands putting forth their best body of work this week, it’s safe to say that this fashion month was a success and that we, of course, have a lot to look forward to come September.
