Almost a year ago Sarah Burton announced that she would be stepping down as creative director of Alexander McQueen for over a decade, since then the rumour mill has been rife with speculation on where she would go next. Today Givenchy set it all to rest by announcing Burton as its next creative director.
Since Matthew M. Williams' departure in December 2023 after a three-year tenure, LVMH-owned Givenchy has been searching for a new creative director. Prior to Williams, Clare Waight Keller held the position from 2017 to 2020, and before her, Riccardo Tisci led the brand for 12 years. This marks a new beginning for Givenchy, and it's fitting that Burton is taking on the role previously held by her dear friend and former boss, Lee McQueen.
“It is a great honour to be joining the beautiful house of Givenchy, it is a jewel,” said Burton in a statement released in the early hours of Monday morning, September 9. “I am so excited to be able to write the next chapter in the story of this iconic house and to bring to Givenchy my own vision, sensibility and beliefs.”
Burton is poised to debut her first collection for the brand in March 2025.
