The 2024 Venice Sustainable Fashion Forum brought forth key takeaways about the future of sustainability in fashion.
This year’s Venice Sustainable Fashion Forum took place on October 25th and was organised by European House Ambrosetti, Sistema Moda Italia and Confindustria Veneto Est at the Giorgio Cini Foundation. Alongside the valuable takeaways about the future of sustainability within fashion, the forum also produced the 3rd edition of the Just Fashion Transition report.
The inevitability of the industry’s transition to sustainability was a main point of discussion, addressed from various angles significant to the industrial development of fashion. Beginning with the fundamental evaluation of the cost of action vs. the cost of inaction, the forum also addressed the consumer’s view of sustainability and the increasingly present public desire to make conscious purchasing decisions.
The more bureaucratic side of implementing new sustainability policies for the future was also addressed - factors such as establishing more consistent rules and creating sustainable debt management were addressed as key factors in the strive for improving the industry. The significance of standardisation in all areas of production, as well as collaboration among stakeholders were also emphasised as key factors for furthering the process of implementation of more effective sustainability practices.
Just Fashion Transition’s 3rd report ultimately summarises an industry-wide acknowledgment of the gravity of sustainability practices. Aside from the general acknowledgment of consumers placing more significance on ethical production of clothes, the changes necessary within internal logistics within the industry are also being addressed. The Forum presented significant confirmations of this, and ascertained a positive direction for the industry in the near future.
