The ever-evolving trend that is the ballet flat is back once again, but this time its versatility knows no bounds.

Like many of us, did you throw away your ballet flats five years ago, thinking they were never coming back? Well, it turns out we were wrong. Just like low-rise jeans, ballet flats are making a comeback. From Simone Rocha's edgy ballerinas to Repetto's classic style, people are embracing ballet flats once again.

If you were born in the 90s, you probably remember the peak of the ballet flats trend. Styled with skinny jeans, batwing long-sleeved tops, and the occasional statement necklace, ballet flats were the go-to shoes for any occasion, from casual to dressy. They were also known for being incredibly comfortable, even if they did take some time to break in. However, as the trend faded away, ballet flats quickly became outdated.

However, as fashion is cyclical, and a younger generation of fashion enthusiasts has since taken the lead, the impossible has happened. When trend forecasters started predicting the return of ballet flats, many of us were sceptical. Yet here we are in 2023, and just like the early 2000s and 2010s are back in style.

Though ballet flats are heavily associated with the Y2K aesthetic, their journey into the fashion limelight actually began with Brigitte Bardot. In the 1956 film 'And God Created Woman,' Bardot was styled with a delicate pair of ballet flats by shoemaker Repetto, who had been crafting shoes for the dancer-trained actress. This marked the beginning of the ballet flat's transition from dance shoes to everyday wear. Today, ballet flats are back in style, thanks to the efforts of fashion icons like Matilda Djerf, Kendall Jenner, Jennifer Lawrence, and Zoe Kravitz. These stars have helped to revive the shoe's popularity, and it is now seen as a versatile and stylish option for a variety of occasions.

The trend has since evolved in recent years to encompass a wider range of styles. Designers like Simone Rocha and Miu Miu have created more voluminous versions of the shoe, while Maison Margiela has offered a more literal take on the ballet flat. This versatility has made ballet flats a favourite among fashion enthusiasts around the world.

Whether you prefer a classic Repetto flat or a more avant-garde style, there is a ballet flat out there for everyone. These versatile shoes are sure to be a staple in your wardrobe for years to come.
